Preventing Depression Naturally

Your happiness and sense of well being is all in your own hands. Yes, life has its ups and downs but we must not let those control our happiness and life satisfaction. Here are some natural and simple ways to keep the sunshine of happiness always bright in your life.

Exercise regularly...it does not have to be a marathon. Just walking or running 20 minutes a day will boost your mood. This is because exercise releases feel good chemicals in your body.

Maintain a daily a routine...a routine makes you feel that you are in control of your life and thus prevent you from feeling helpless.

Have a well balanced diet and avoid fatty and sugary foods

Supplements such as omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and vitamin B have been implicated in maintaining good mood.

Plan something fun or enjoyable everyday, it could be something as simple as going to a coffee shop and people watching.

Write a gratitude journal every night before you go to bed.

Additionally, from my own experience, happiness does not come to you from an external source. Happiness comes from within you. Happiness is learned, and its a choice. Cultivate the happiness from within by being grateful for everything you have and choosing to focus on the things that make you happy.

  1. Great idea, we all need to keep our brains sharp as we age, especially with all these cases of dementia.

  2. Another good technique you can implement is problem solving. Many people who can't handle certain situations effectively may let their issues overwhelm them and cause anxiety that may lead to depressive symptoms. Writing down possible solutions, outcomes and ways to handle an issue is a good way to put thing into perspective and look at your options. It is also important to have a good support group or person, someone to talk to so you don't feel alone or burdened. Just talking about what is bothering you can be a great release.
